CRD Player

Trading-card based music

Designed by Rory Boyd

The CRD player is a compact, pocket-sized music device designed to complement the size and convenience of modern electronics while prioritising playback through physical media. Audio is stored on lightweight, durable CRDs – similar in size to a bank card, but shorter, with embedded storage and electrical contacts; when inserted, the device plays content via analogue or Bluetooth output, controlled through a simple, tactile interface with minimal on-screen feedback.

Drawing from older music formats but adapted for modern use, CRDs are more compact than CDs, cassettes, or vinyl, fitting easily in a wallet. Developed in response to the dominance of streaming services, the system offers a more deliberate, focused listening experience, reducing reliance on smartphones for music and the constant, passive consumption they often encourage.
