Plyio - Andrew Hutchison
A new, agile, affordable and sustainable approach to STEM education
Interviews with Primary School practitioners identified that Primary STEM resources are prohibitively expensive. As a result, Primary School practitioners spend a considerable amount of time improvising resources of their own, detracting from valuable time spent training and lesson planning. Furthermore, cheaper alternatives from charitable enterprises such as Primary Engineer utilise consumables and don’t provide enough content to sustain year round learning.
Plyio is a new enterprise which couples digital manufacturing technologies with sustainably sourced plywood in order to create STEM resources which are affordable, educational and fun. Plyio is unique as it utilises Laser Cutting as its primary means of manufacture. This puts its designers closer to manufacture allowing them to remain agile where other companies are stagnant. Plyio can offer the same content at half of the cost of Lego Education. Furthermore, no proprietary components make their way in to Plyio’s resources. Birch Veneer Plywood is laser cut and interfaced with off the shelf components making the sourcing replacement parts hassle free and affordable.
