Myst - Caitlin Berry
An accessible automated gardening system for growing a sustainable indoor crop
Leading scientists have projected that over the next 40 years, people will need to produce as much food as they have in the past 10,000 years combined on a global scale.
The Myst Garden is a growing system for the home that is accessible, easy to use, and requires minimal resources and knowledge of horticultural practices. This has been realised as a modular automated, aeroponic gardening system.
Due to its use of High Pressure Aeroponics, the Myst garden uses 90% less water, 70% less nutrients and requires 50% less growing time than equivalent soil growing methods, and does not require the use of any pesticides.
To provide optimal growth conditions for the plants, OLED lights are incorporated into the system, changing to mimic the plants’ natural circadian rhythm and to provide the most efficient wavelengths of light for their growth stage. This lighting has also been shown to have a positive effect on human emotional wellbeing.
Through an app linked to the growing system, information is presented clearly and concisely alongside key advice for growing plants effectively. This allows close monitoring of plant health without requiring horticultural experience or training.
