Series W

A washing machine designed around service life extension.

Designed by Louis Deane

Series W addresses a fundamental issue within sustainable design: we are constrained by the economic system we operate within. Linear economic models drive rapid product turnover, shortening lifespans and reinforcing a culture of replacement. Within domestic appliances, this is increasingly evident through sealed components and inaccessible assemblies that make repair difficult and uneconomical.

Framed through Walter Stahel’s performance economy theory, the project proposes an alternative centred on service life extension. Explored through the redesign of a washing machine, it addresses the repair difficulties associated with bearing failure through a modular ballast system, guided drum removal and simplified disassembly process, while remaining aligned with contemporary manufacturing practices.
