LINA - Jessica Thomasson
Enabling convenient cultivation of nutritional microalgae in the home, providing insight into future relationships with food
Rapid rise in global population and changes in climate, coupled with economic uncertainties, look to place increasing pressure on global food provision and security. There is a need for less resource intensive, local and sustainable food provision.
Spirulina, a type of blue-green microalgae, has been recognised by the World Health Organisation as having the potential to provide a sustainable solution. Spirulina is remarkably high in nutrients: up to twice the amount of protein than beef, and over three times the amount of iron.
LINA is a domestic cultivation system for growing fresh Spirulina. The product incorporates light, agitation and temperature controls, optimising the growing conditions; providing consistency to the user. The harvesting pod, placed into the front of the product, is used to filter out the desired quantity, which is selected using the front mounted dial. The fresh Spirulina can then be added to hummus, stir fries, smoothies, ice cream and more!
LINA aims to provide insight into future relationships with food, lowering the threshold towards positive, sustainable change.
