Incharge - Euan McPherson
Communal wireless charging for electric vehicles
Incharge is a communal, mobile, wireless charging solution for electric vehicle owners who do not have access to a driveway or off-street parking where a home charge point can be installed, and encourages the adoption of low emissions vehicles in urban areas.
The product works on the principle of resonant magnetic induction, transferring power between two copper coils over an air gap, and allows for efficient and accurate alignment.
The transmitter coil sits under the road surface on a moving platform, on an electrified track. This configuration allows for accurate alignment of the receiver coil, which is fixed to the underside of the electric vehicle. By allowing the charger to move along an axis, the pad can charge one vehicle, then move to the next, and so on, potentially covering an entire street - enabling multiple electric vehicles to be charged overnight or during the day.
Power is delivered at a rate of 7.7-22kW, enabling up to 80% of charge in around an hour. If multiple vehicles require charging, they are added to the queue and the user is notified of the predicted charge completion time via a smartphone app or using the in-car entertainment interface.
