The Product

Libraries have played a crucial role in the development of modern society. The access to free educational tools and safe, comfortable spaces is invaluable.

However, with funding cuts and closures of libraries in Scotland, it is vital that these resources are still utilised by the public.

INViro is a small-scale modular planter used to create more comfortable environments within busy urban libraries through the use of nature. INViro aimed to promote inclusivity and intuitive user interactions. Colour and form played a key role in the development of the product. Along with this, modern growing technology such as drip irrigation and electronic monitoring were incorporated to promote plant health and ease of use.

I believe, as designers, we have a responsibility to design for the future and make the environment a key foundation within our process.

The Process

Due to the nature of the project and the requirements for it to be both practical and eye catching, the aesthetics are essential to the success of the overall product. The design was developed through the use of 2D and 3D prototyping and colour studies.

The product is designed to be inclusive to all and for there to be no 'rules' surrounding how and when to interact with it. To remove confusion and hesitation around the final product, it was designed with openness in mind. This included leaving the front open and creating a welcoming frame for the plants.
