The Bigger Picture

The bigger picture is a three-part system allowing schools and environmental groups to capture, analyse and share data on microplastics. The kit consists of a self-righting vessel designed for isokinetic sampling with minimal fluid dynamic interference. This can be deployed using several, ergonomically comfortable and safe methods, the sample is then poured over grade 91 cellulose filter paper and analysed using a macro-lens that enables the user to view and count micro to nano plastics. This data is then added to an open source sharing platform that collates and visualises it to better understand the extent of pollution and enable comparisons.

This system empowers citizens to collect data on a scale not previously possible with traditional microplastic analysis therefore deepening the public and scientific understanding of the problem. Improved understanding and awareness creates a foundation for systematic social and legislative change towards cleaner and healthier rivers.
